Who is Ashton Friend?
Hi everyone, my name is Ashton Friend. I am a junior outfielder. Before coming to Washburn, I graduated from Collinsville High School in Collinsville, OK. After high school I attended Cowley County Community College and played softball. At Cowley I earned my Associates of Science degree. I remember playing Washburn in a Fall scrimmage during my sophomore year and instantly fell in love with the campus. I am currently on the path to receive my Bachelors of Exercise Science & Rehabilitative Science Degree. With this I plan on becoming an Exercise Physiologist.
Staying Positive:
Since the canceling of all Spring sports I have returned home for the time being. Although this has been a draining and stressful time, I am doing my best to find the positives. When my time isn’t being spent on homework it’s being spent with my family and helping around the house. There are a lot of small projects going on, so I never have much time to be bored. I have learned that I enjoy yard work and gardening. I have learned that I am pretty good at following instructions on how to build a shed. I am working on my culinary skills by making a few meals and baking lots of sweets.  I am also still working on all things softball. When the season was canceled I was stunned, and it took a few weeks to process what had happened. I am constantly wanting my mom or day to go out and play catch or for my dad to come out and watch my swing.
Missing Washburn:
In this time away I realized how much I miss my teammates and coaches. It’s easy to get used to seeing someone every day and taking advantage of that. It took being separated to truly appreciate the great people that I am surrounded by daily. I miss walking around campus (when the weather is nice and not snowing) to get to my classes. I miss the field and practice.  This time has taught me to truly appreciate the small things and to enjoy everything because it can be taken away in an instant. I can’t wait to get back to Ichabod Nation! Sko’ Bods!!

May 15, 2020 Meet Autymn Schreiner: My name is Autymn Schreiner and I am an incoming freshman utility player from Maple Hill, Kansas. I attended Wabaunsee High School and have recently just finished my last semester online. In high school, I was involved in twelve different clubs and sports including softball. I have been playing softball ever since I could hold a bat. In high school, I was a four-year starter and letter winner and helped lead the team to be the 2018 2-1A State Champions.  Why Washburn? When choosing a college I was really looking for a home away from home and as soon as I stepped on Washburn’s campus, I knew I had found the right place. May 13, 2020 Meet Skylar Darnell: My name is Skylar Darnell and I will be an incoming transfer from Cowley County Community College. I was born in Jacksonville, NC, but raised in Mulvane, KS. I am a catcher/outfielder. At Cowley my freshman year I received 2 nd team, All Conference honors at catcher. Recently, I just graduated from Cowley County with my Associate of Arts degree. At Washburn I will continue my studies in Accounting. Trying to find a new normal: This time off was a struggle for me at first. I’m a super outgoing person, so being around my teammates or having something to do all day was a fit for me. When everything was cancelled, I was very lost on what to do with my time.
