Who is Ellie Dixon?
Hello! My name is Ellie Dixon and I am an infielder at Washburn. I am originally from Iowa City, Iowa (go Hawks) and came to Washburn after I attended junior college in Boone, Iowa. I went to DMACC for two years and received my liberal arts degree while playing softball. While searching for a new place to play softball I came on a visit to Washburn! I was instantly impressed with the beautiful campus and welcoming people. I made my decision to attend Washburn and become a part of the softball program last May after my season was over at DMACC. I found my love of softball through my dad. Ever since I can remember I have begged him to play catch with me outside after dinner or take me to my brother’s practices so I could watch. Softball and baseball followed us everywhere, and to this day our favorite on the road snack is sunflower seeds.
Following My Passion
I am currently majoring in Elementary Education and also getting endorsements in ESOL and Special Education. My passion of teaching came from my mom. When I was little I remember going to watch her teach in the summers to kids who had mental or physical disabilities. I feel very fortunate to have found my passion at such an early age, and to have many mentors surrounding me to help me reach my goal of becoming a teacher myself. I am also extremely lucky to have found professors, coaches, teammates, family, and friends at DMACC and Washburn who have pushed me to become the best player and person I can be.
Counting My Blessings
During this uncertain and confusing time I have found positivity in little things such as connecting with friends and family, working out, and journaling. There are a couple of quotes that I have been taught through my life, but they have become extremely apparent through these times. The first is from my grandpa; every season he has given me a bracelet that says, “Keep working hard.” I know these words sound so simple, but every time I look at my wrist I am reminded that one of the few things I can control during this time is how hard I work day to day. The other quote is from my mom; “Let the old world spin a few times, and always appreciate the little things.” With COVID-19 there are so many things that we wish to change or go away. This quote helps me stay grounded and have a positive mindset that this will all be over soon, and we are one day closer to normalcy. I cannot wait for the day I can see my teammates around campus, attend practices until the sun sets, and mess around with Jenna Moore while warming up our arms before practices/games. For now, I will cherish the lifelong memories I’ve made and look forward to how many there are to come!
